Dr. David Lamothe of Smyrna Dental encourages patients to visit him regularly for their twice-yearly examination and cleaning. However, there are times when patients may need to visit our practice in Smyrna, Georgia, for specific services, such as the placement of dental crowns.
Dental crowns are standard in general, restorative, and cosmetic dentistry. They are often the best solution for patients whose natural teeth require an extra layer of protection. Crowns may be generally recommended when patients have a large cavity or have undergone root canal therapy and repeated dental treatments, which weaken the tooth and cause it to become brittle. The tooth may crack under chewing and biting forces. These and other situations warrant the placement of dental crowns to keep the natural teeth intact and to protect them.
Dental crowns may also be necessary as a form of tooth replacement. They are bonded to both sides of a false tooth or “pontic” to fabricate a dental bridge. Bridges are used to replace missing teeth and include two crowns and one or more pontics. The adjacent teeth are prepared for the bridge placement, removing some of the tooth enamel for a precise fit. Dental bridges are alternatives to partial dentures.
When determining if a dental crown is necessary, Dr. Lamothe will start by evaluating the smile. X-rays may be done to ensure the smile’s health and check for any problematic areas of decay. Bring any questions or concerns about your smile to us by calling (678) 374-3764.
